God’s word is clear and our political leaders should learn something from the Bible!
As true Christians, we know the word of God is perfect and infallible. The Bible is our ultimate understanding of the world and how we should live in it.
Sadly, this month has proven how far some on the political left tend to misquote scripture and manipulate its meaning.
For the last few weeks, the media has filled with airwaves with Bible quotes and interpretations of the God’s word regarding immigration and the role of government. As a Christian, I’m glad to see the Bible used and quoted when debating difficult political and social issues. At least it’s a good starting point when we attempt to attack difficult social issues.
Although the use of scripture is a good starting point when determining how to make complex national decisions, it seems there are as many “interpretations of the Bible” as there are “political opinions”. Therefore, let’s examine what the bible really directs us to do from a national and local perspective.
First, let’s look at the role of government and how God places this human institution over us.
In Romans, Chapter 13, the Bible explains how Christians should interact with local and national governments. Chapter 13 explains:
“Everyone must submit to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those that exist are instituted by God. So then, the one who resists the authority is opposing God’s command, and those who oppose it will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but too bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval.” (MSG)
However, God also demands we treat immigrants with all the respect, care and rights as native born citizens. As Leviticus 19: 33-34 clearly explains;
“When a foreigner lives with you in your land, you must not oppress him. You must regard the foreigner who lives with you as the native-born among you. You are to love him as yourself, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your God. (Msg)
Many journalist and liberal elites have discovered the “Bible” and plucked out the verses favoring their side. However, only one “side” is right on this issue and God makes his word on the current immigration issue very clear.
But sadly, in the current media climate liberal journalist (in most cases) fail to take the whole word of God to make meaning and decisions upon the bible. Often, each side takes a few verses to support their point of view and only enlarges the argument which only produces anger and outrage.
Many liberal and some secular conservatives see the word of God as weapons to attack opponents only leading to harsher words. As I Timothy 6:20 states,
“Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding irreverent, empty speech and contradictions from the “knowledge” that falsely bears that name. 21 By professing it, some people have deviated from the faith.” (Msg)
He is to avoid the profane and idle babble and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge. Idle babble or chatter is empty talk about matters which are not profitable. Paul realized that Timothy would encounter a great deal of teaching which posed as true knowledge but which was actually opposed to the Christian revelation.
So how does God’s word instruct us on the debate on immigration?
First, God tells us to obey the rules and the laws of the land (government) because He has appointed leaders over us. Therefore, as Christians, we need to obey the laws of our government so long as the law does not violate God’s will.
Secondly, the bible instructs Christians to treat forgivers (immigrants) as brothers and as you would treat yourself.
So how do we settle the conflicting issues in our day and time? The answer is simple.
Immigrants should obey the immigration law of the United States because God commands them to do so. Once an immigrant has earned the “legal right” to residency or citizenship, Christians are required welcome them with open arms. Yes, this social and biblical argument is that simple!
The current immigration crisis at American’s border has been caused by liberal and far left groups and organizations assisting in outright law breaking for political gain. Even liberal “Christians” are on the front line of this violation of God’s word and should know better.
As bible believing Christians we should prey for our brothers and sisters who have fallen into the liberal dogma that is not biblical.
I say this in the hopes of bringing Christians back from the brink of evil and death. My hope is that those who violate the law come to repentance and escape the snare of the devil and political correctness. (2 Tim 2:24-26)
